Nick Emler

Nick Emler is Professor of Psychology at Surrey University and has published widely on psychological needs - most notably Emler, N. (2001). Self-esteem; The costs and causes of low self-worth.

Nick was educated at Southampton and LSE.  His first university post was at the University of Dundee and has held chairs at Dundee, Oxford, LSE, Université Rene Descartes Paris and most recently Surrey where he is currently Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences and Professor of Social Psychology.

Nicks research interests are concerned with various facets of moral psychology.  More specifically they relate to: delinquency and anti-social behaviour; reputational processes, including social information exchange (gossip); childhood development of representations of social structure; political engagement; leadership; justice in the household; self-esteem.  The concept of reputation provides a linking theme for several of these interests.

Nick is an advisor to the Mapping Needs Project.
