10 Years On: What did we learn from the Northern Disturbances?
The Attlee Suite, Portcullis House, The House of Commons, SW1A 2TT
In 2001, three towns in the North of England were struck by some of the worst riots in British history. Ten years later the UpRising Leadership programme looks back with the aim of understanding what lessons have been learnt.
UpRising was created as a direct response to the recommendations made in the original cohesion reports into Bradford, Burnley and Oldham as a means to tackle the democratic deficit that exists amongst young people in Britain.
Our panel includes:
- Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting, Shadow Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary
- Dr Jeffrey Bailey, Chairman in Residence at The Centre for Social Justice
- Vikram Dodd, Crime Correspondent for The Guardian
- Catrin Nye, Senior Reporter for BBC News (TBC)
UpRising will be showcasing its work and impact on youth engagement and campaigning for social change, illustrating how we are meeting the needs of a new generation of leaders in a diverse Britain and globalised world.
Patrons include Prime Minister David Cameron, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Leader of the Opposition Ed Miliband and former Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Rushanara Ali, MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, is Chair of UpRising. For further information please email uprising@youngfoundation.org.
