National Citizen Service: building a more successful transition to adulthood?
In Autumn 2010 the coalition government set out its vision for a National Citizen Service - a two month summer programme for 16-year olds, encouraging community involvement and active responsible citizenship.
The programme is to be delivered by independent charities, social enterprises and businesses, and according to the Prime Minister will: "mix young people from different backgrounds, different ethnicities and religions, in a way that doesn't happen right now. It's going to teach them what it means to be socially responsible by asking them to serve their communities."
In this lunchtime seminar from the Young Foundation, we discussed this new initiative with The Challenge Network and the Venture Trust.
- The Challenge Network (one of the designated providers of the National Citizen Service) designs and delivers ‘The Challenge' - inspiring young people from diverse backgrounds to come together and make their mark in the community.
- The Venture Trust run intensive personal development programmes using wilderness settings and activities.
