What happens when you get a bunch of software developers and social innovators together, give them a set of social problems and only 48 hours to solve them?

In London between 4th-6th April 2008, the Social Innovation Camp brought together some of the best of the UK and Europe's web developers and designers with epople at the sharp end of social problems.

With the aim of finding ways that easy-to-build web 2.0 tools can be used to develop solutions to social challenges, the result was a variety of stunning ideas and inspired results, including:

  • Wibi-it: Formerly Barcode Wikipedia.  Formerly Barcode Wikipedia. A site for storing user-generated information – such as carbon footprint, manufacturing conditions and reviews - against a product, identified by its barcode number
  • Enbled by Design: A resource for anyone looking to make adjustments to their lives, be it as a result of disability, injury or impairment. Enabled by Design won £2,000 as our judges' favourite idea at Show and Tell
  • On The Up: Formerly Personal Development Reports. An online system that supports young people to identify their personal skills and qualities.
  • Rate Your Prison: Formerly Prison Visits. A tool to support the families of prisoners coping with the experience of being apart from a loved one. Rate Your Prison won £1,000 as the runner-up project at Show and Tell
  • CV Life Line: Formerly Rate my CV. A site for helping jobseekers using Web 2.0 tools
  • Stuffshare: Freecycle meets Street Car: a stuff club
  • The Glue: Our rebel project. All out other projects came out of our call for ideas. TheGlue appeared at lunchtime on Saturday at Social Innovation Camp. It's a tool to help families who live far apart care for elderly relatives

After some deliberation, the judges awarded £2,000 to Enabled by Design as the winners and £1,000 to the runners up, Prison Visits.  The judges said: "We were genuinely so impressed by every single one of the projects that came out of Social Innovation Camp and we’re looking forward to hearing about what the teams are going to be doing next with all the hard work they’ve put in so far".
