The World in our Neighbourhoods

Monday, 11 December 2006 9:00 - 9:00

The Transforming Neighbourhoods team at the Young Foundation worked with Haringey Council to organise 'The World in our Neighbourhoods', a conference about globalisation, diversity and neighbourhoods, on December 11th 2006 at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.

This conference tackled the very topical subjects of community cohesion and migration and looked at how neighbourhood management and neighbourhood working can build community confidence and support disadvantaged communities. With the Local Government White Paper now published and its emphasis on community cohesion, community engagement and neighbourhood management, this is presented a chance to learn from international experience across Europe and beyond. We assembled excellent speakers and a range of case studies from other countries, resulting in a fascinating day.

The conference featured high profile speakers discussing different perspectives on diversity and neighbourhoods – including Culture Minister David Lammy, Geoff Mulgan (Director of The Young Foundation), Professor Miles Hewstone (Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Oxford), Professor Michael Keith (Professor in Sociology and Head of the Centre for Urban and Community Research at Goldsmiths College), and case studies about neighbourhoods in Amsterdam, Stockholm, Vancouver and India.
