Michael Young Prize 2006

Michael Young Prize 2006

The first winners of the Michael Young Prize were announced on July 12th. Their work ranged from inventing better ways to help deaf children to read and write, to research on wrongly convicted prisoners and the ‘glass cliffs’ and ‘glass ceilings’ that women face in the workplace. The prize, which has been jointly established by the Economic and Social Research Council and the Young Foundation, is for new academics who have done work combining empirical research, analytic rigour and practical benefit for society.

* Dr Michelle Ryan receives a runner-up prize from Geoff Mulgan to contribute towards raising awareness among minority groups of the glass cliff phenomenon.
* Dr Michael Norton was awarded a runner-up prize for his research titled ‘Prisoners maintaining innocent: towards deeper understanding and effective reform’.
* Dr Diana Burman won first prize for ground-breaking research that helped her to develop a highly successful method for improving profoundly deaf children’s English literacy.
