Report on the London Olympics 2012 - Brick Lane and Green Street

This week the Young Foundation launched "Bridging the Gap: The London Olympics 2012 and South Asian-owned Businesses in Brick Lane and Green Street" by Sean Carey and Nooruddin Ahmed - a report which reveals a significant gap between the activities of the London Olympics 2012 development agencies and the expectations of small businesses in Brick Lane and Green Street.

The study of 50 small Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani catering, commercial and retail outlets in Brick Lane (Tower Hamlets) and Green Street (Newham) analyses what local retailers believe will happen to the streets and to themselves. Brick Lane is known as the ‘curry capital’ of the UK, while Green Street is renowned for the multitude – around 400 – of south Asian fashion, jewellery and other shops along the length of the high street and side street locations.

The report makes the case for the Olympics to provide a lasting legacy on business opportunities in two very different areas of London’s East End long after the Olympics have finished.

The research was commissioned and undertaken by Agroni Research, an agency specialising in BME communities.
