Neighbourhood Action Network: Practical Projects

Learning from practical work on the ground is an essential part of our approach.  We will be carrying out a series of projects in different communities with our local authority partners, working directly with community groups, activists and residents, elected members, council officers and other public agencies.

Our practical projects will include work on the following issues:

• Measuring the impact of neighbourhood working - exploring how local authorities can assess the impact of their work to develop templates of different ways to measure impact at the neighbourhood level, to disseminate this learning widely to the wider local government community, and to central government

• Neighbourhood working in very diverse areas – we want to explore the implication for neighbourhood working of increased diversity within communities and the impact of globalisation and changing economic and migration patterns at street level

• Young people’s engagement – this continues to be an area which local authorities struggle with and where we believe there is potential for shared learning

• Organisational culture and embedding community engagement – exploring and addressing the obstacles that prevent ideas about community engagement being transferred and adopted within local government and other public agencies

• Councillor influence – building on our work about the role of councillors in neighbourhood working, this workstream will look at ways to strengthen the role of elected members at ward level and to test new ways for members to work locally
