In recent years, the Neighbourhoods' agenda has been of increasing interest to both central and local government. This is evidenced by the increased priority given to neighbourhood and community empowerment in Whitehall policies. Our Neighbourhoods' work aims to provide research and projects that support local communities and increase their sense of empowerment along with greater powers at a local level.
Solutions for local estates
The Young Foundation is working in Coventry, South Tyneside and Tonbridge and East Malling to explore how life can be improved for residents of three small, very different housing estates.
Blackbird Leys
Blackbird Leys is one of England’s most deprived estates with high levels of long-term unemployment and issues with drug abuse and anti-social behaviour. The Young Foundation is carrying out research into the underlying causes of deprivation in Blackbird Leys and exploring previous attempts at regeneration.
Neighbourhood Futures
The Young Foundation has brought together a consortium of local authority partners to explore the impacts of the economic downturn on the future of neighbourhood working and community empowerment.
Research and Reports
As part of our neighbourhoods work the Young Foundation develops research and policy briefs on a number of issues including how to develop a local charter and the role of frontline councillors.

FixMyStreet is a new web-based mapping tool to make it easy for people to talk to their local authority about broken civic infrastructure in their neighbourhood.

The Neighbourhood Taskforce concept is a model developed to tackle entrenched problems in areas where community capacity is low and services have difficulty engaging residents.
