Update from the Young Foundation director (May 2010)
As the dust settles on an extraordinary election (which saw one former and one current member of staff elected as MPs, Tory and Labour respectively), we see fascinating implications for our work.
The first is that the new government is genuinely interested in our approach to venturing: just before the election David Cameron talked about us in his Big Society speech promising a newly created ‘Big Society Bank' which would "Provide small amounts of working capital to help them grow. Mentor and advise them so they grasp the best opportunities for delivering public services that serve the public. And, crucially, to help to franchise the best models around the country." This is exactly what we do through our Launchpad team and through our network of social entrepreneurs in residence across the country.
Second, our work on public services will become even more central to the policy agenda. Over the last few years we have been developing radically different and more effective models in education and healthcare, as well as showing how public services can themselves innovate. As pressures on public funds intensify we expect there to be much more appetite for work of this kind - particularly for the ideas we've developed on how public services can innovate whilst driving up productivity. We also expect more interest in the practical ideas we are shaping for involving communities in public services.
Finally, we want to respond to the mood for political reform. The current appetite for a new kind of political leadership chimes well with the Uprising programme (which can now claim both the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister as patrons) and the extraordinary range of projects of the Youth of Today programme. Some of you may also have seen the new First Political Memory site which we've launched, with memories from everyone from Boris Johnson and Gordon Brown to Amartya Sen. This rich record of political reminiscences shows that politics is inextricably linked to our lives.
