Receding Tide: Understanding unmet needs in a harsher economic climate

Receding Tide: Understanding unmet needs in a harsher economic climate by Dan Vale, Beth Watts and Jane Franklin (January 2009)

Report from the Young Foundation warns that the recession may have more impact on Britain's psychological well-being as on material standards of living. While many are suffering materially, many families and communities are being harmed by greater stress and anxiety, in part caused by fear of job loss and financial worries. Research indicates that men exposed to major financial stress are three times more likely to suffer from debilitating levels of anxiety and depression, and women about two and a half times.

The report, Receding Tide, forms part of a large-scale survey of the UK's changing needs supported by a dozen leading foundations, that includes statistical analysis, forecasting on future needs and local case studies.

The Young Foundation's Unmet and Emerging Needs programme aims to make sense of modern British society through the lens of unmet need and to provide organisations trying to meet need with new tools to help better allocate resources.  The interim report shares the findings of the first nine months of the programme with a full report due in September 2009.
