Building Resilience in Children and Young People

Wednesday, 8 December 2010 9:00 - Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:00

Resilience is the ordinary superpower every young person needs to be able to withstand stress, deal with set-backs, rise up to challenges and grasp opportunities.

Recent research has identified resilience as the critical factor underpinning children's wellbeing, positive behaviour and readiness to learn. This skills-based training draws on a growing body of international evidence about how resilient thinking skills can be taught to children and young people. It also builds on The Young Foundation's ongoing research into practical ways to increase young people's wellbeing and life opportunities.

The training is led by Dr Ilona Boniwell and Lucy Ryan, two of the UK's leading experts in positive psychology. Ilona and Lucy are highly experienced trainers widely recognised for their promotion of wellbeing and resilience in organisational and educational settings. Together they developed the wellbeing curriculum for Haberdasher's Aske's Hatcham College and the Newham Resilience Initiative, a training programme delivered across all schools in the London Borough of Newham. They are also currently working with The Young Foundation and Harrow Metropolitan Police to develop a resilience programme for young offenders.

The training is designed for teachers, youth support workers, and mental health professionals.
