Senior Research Fellow, University of Manchester
Seán is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Social Sciences and a member of the Centre on Dynamics of Ethnicity (CODE) at the University of Manchester. With a deep interest in ethnicity and migration, he has dedicated a significant portion of his career to studying the Bangladeshi community in east London. Seán has lectured or conducted research at the University of Northumbria, Royal Holloway, University of London, and the University of Roehampton’s Business School.
In 2000, Tower Hamlets Council commissioned him to study drug use among Bangladeshi young people in the borough. Subsequently, from 2002 to 2003, Cityside Regeneration and the Ethnic Minority Enterprise Project (EMEP) commissioned him to study the proliferation of curry restaurants on Brick Lane. The findings of this research were published as Curry Capital by the Institute of Community Studies in 2004. Since 2018, Seán has been researching the curry sector and other ethnic minority business sectors in Brick Lane for the Beyond Banglatown project with Professor Claire Alexander from the University of Manchester and Dr Sundeep Lidher from Kings College London.
Beyond his focus on East London, Seán has a lasting interest in the economic, political and social organisation of Mauritius. He has contributed articles about the Indian Ocean nation to a variety of publications and platforms, including African Arguments, African Business, Africa Investor, BTI Transformation Index, The Guardian, New African, New Statesman and Oxford Analytica.
