Our history

A shared endeavour

Established by sociologist Michael Young in 1953, the Institute for Community Studies is a core part of The Young Foundation. We are an evidence centre with people at our heart, exploring what works for UK communities. Using qualitative and ethnographic research, with a focus on participatory methods and quantitative, data-driven analyses, we work to build a rich picture of life in the UK today.
