Join us at locations around the UK, where we’re screening short films made by young people exploring their civic journey
At the Institute for Community Studies, we have been working across the UK to support young people aged 16 to 30 to create documentaries about the opportunities and barriers they face as they embark on their civic journey. You are warmly invited to join us for special screenings of these documentaries, hosted in Belfast, Manchester, Wolverhampton and Totnes.
These documentaries are part of the Civic Journey research project that aims to influence policy to create a blueprint that supports young people to be more civically engaged (also known as their civic journey).
These short films use a participatory video research method, which means they are made by, and representative of, young people at every stage of the process. Documentary themes include campaigning, volunteering, democratic participation, infrastructures and reimagining communities.
Where can I join a screening?
1. Belfast
- Where: The Strand Arts Centre Cinema, 152-154 Holywood Rd, Belfast, BT4 1NY
- When: Monday 14 November, 5.15–7pm
- Additional information: finger food and drinks will be provided, and the screening will be supported by a discussion of the themes raised. This is a screening of two documentaries – one shot by young people in Belfast, the other by young people in Portadown. A bus will be available to take guests based in Portadown to The Strand Art Centre Cinema and back.

2. Wolverhampton
- Where: Ana’s Coffee Shop, Temple Street, WV2 4AU
- When: Wednesday 16 November, 5.45-7.30pm
- Additional information: finger food and drinks will be provided, and the screening will be supported by a discussion of the themes raised. This is a screening of two documentaries – one shot by young people in and around Wolverhampton, the second by young people in and around Walsall.

3. Totnes
- Where: Totnes Cinema, Film & Theatre, 27A High St, Totnes, TQ9 5NP
- When: Monday 21 November, 5.45-7.30pm
- Additional information: finger food and drinks will be provided, and the screening will be supported by a discussion of the themes raised. This is a screening of two documentaries – one shot by young people in Plymouth, the second by young people in Totnes.

4. Manchester
- Where: Miners Community Arts and Music Centre, Teddington Road, Moston, M40 0DJ
- When: Tuesday 22 November, 5.45-7.30pm
- Additional information: finger food and drinks will be provided, and the screening will be supported by a discussion of the themes raised. This is a screening of two documentaries – one shot by young people in North Manchester, the second by young people in Oldham.
